Ajaan Lee was one of the foremost teachers in the Thai forest ascetic tradition of meditation founded at the turn of the century by his teacher, Phra Ajaan Mun Bhuridatta. His life was short but eventful. Known for his skill as a teacher and his mastery of supranatural powers, he was the first to bring the ascetic tradition out of the forests of the Mekhong basin and into the mainstream of Thai society in central Thailand.

Ajahn Chah (Phra Bodhinyana Thera) was one of the meditation teachers in the Thai forest tradition of Theravada Buddhism. He established many branch monasteries in Thailand and his Western disciples have carried the tradition to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and America.

Ajahn Sumedho is the senior Western disciple of the well-known Thai meditation master Ajahn Chah. He is currently abbot of Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in England.

Thanissaro Bhikkhu, (Geoffrey DeGraff) began practicing meditation with his teacher, Ajaan Fuang Jotiko -- a member of the Thai forest tradition -- in 1974; ordained in 1976; and continued studying with Ajaan Fuang until the latter's death in 1986. In 1991 he came to southern California to help set up the Metta Forest Monastery in the mountains of north San Diego county. He was made abbot of the monastery in 1993. In addition to teaching at the monastery, he teaches regularly with the John Wayne Dhamma Center in Orange County, and the Barre Center of Buddhist Studies in Massachusetts.

The Venerable Amatha Gavesi was born in Walana, Panadura in Sri Lanka on 19 December 1918 with a mission to preserve and prolong the Buddha Sasana by reviving the essence of the teachings of the Buddha in a practical manner through guided meditation, to develop calmness and insight (Samatha-Vipassana) step-by-step, leading to the Ariya Path or the Noble way of life.
