Ashoka is a new forum for teaching, learning and practicing Dharma — a Web-based interactive learning environment designed around authentic Buddhist practices. Ashoka will use the reach and instructional efficacy of internet-based distance learning to skillfully empower people around the world to incorporate the teachings of the Buddha — the Buddhadharma — into their lives.

The Association of Theravāda Buddhist Universities (ATBU) is an inclusive global network. It unites the people, knowledge and skills of every Higher Education Institution with a specific mission to educate students to understand and practise the Buddha's Dhamma as presented in the Pāli Canon.

It provides a framework within which Theravāda Buddhist Universities can:

* better understand each other's policies and activities and be better understood regionally and internationally;
* collaborate in administration, teaching, research and outreach;
* recognise each other's qualifications.

The Buddhist and Pali College of Singapore was set up in 1994 as another educational project, other than the Sunday Dhamma Classes, launched under the able guidance and patronage of late Venerable M M Mahaweera Maha Nayaka Thero. The college caters to the religious and educational needs of Singaporeans who eagerly seek ways to widen the horizon of their knowledge of Buddhism. The principal of this college is Venerable Dr. P Gnanarama Nayaka Maha Thero (PhD).

The Centre for Buddhist Studies at the University of Bristol was created in 1993 within the Department of Theology and Religious Studies (above). It is the only Centre for Buddhist Studies in the UK, and as well as the usual undergraduate and research degrees offers the only taught MA in Buddhist Studies in the UK.

The Centre of Buddhist Studies was established in September 2000. It is the first academic centre to focus on Buddhist Studies at the University of Hong Kong and at other local universities.

The College is dedicated to study and research in the field of religious studies and fosters mutual understanding, cooperation, and respect among people of different religious traditions both in Thailand and throughout the world.

The College offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. The undergraduate program is a bilingual using both the Thai and English languages. The international MA and PhD programs are conducted in English.

The Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies is one of the oldest departments that exists in the faculty of Humanities and has an outstanding international reputation. It is a vigorous and expanding center of teaching and research and remains deeply committed to the study of Pali and Buddhist Studies. The department handles three main disciplines. They are Pali, Buddhist Philosophy and Buddhist Culture.

This document provides information regarding graduate studies programs in the field of Asian philosophy and religion (including Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism or Taoism), housed by several dozen educational institutions worldwide.

Outline of Programmes

Living Dharma serves as a unique, individual study and practice programme with mentors who have a deep and long standing appreciation of the Buddha's teachings.

The study topics for the first year (for new and experienced Dharma students) will relate to the basic teachings of the Four Noble Truth and the Eightfold Path and their daily life application.

The Living Dharma student area provides study material for downloading and reading:

Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU) was established by His Majesty the King Chulalongkorn the Great in BE 2430/CE 1887, and offered the first classes in Be 2432/CE 1889. In keeping with His Majesty's intentions, MCU has become a major institute of Buddhist Higher Education, Research and Community Service, education monks, novice and laity at campuses throughout Thailand.

MCU at Bangkok offers the Bachelor's Master's and Doctorate degrees with faculties in Buddhism, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences.

The International Programme offers the Master's degree in Buddhist Studies and Philosophy, Designed to facilitate and support international research in Buddhist studies, the medium of instruction, both spoken and written, is English.

Mahamakut Buddhist University is an higher education academy of Thai Sangha. It was established by King Rama V on 1st October B.E. 2436 and named "Mahamakuta-rajavidyalaya" to be the memorial for King Rama IV. A University was located at Wat Bovonnivesvihara, Phranakorn district, Bangkok.

Nowadays, Mahamakut Buddhist University consists of five faculties with eleven courses available for Bachelor's Degrees which are as follows:

Faculty of Philosophy (Philosophy Major);
Faculty of Humanities (English major) and (Sanskrit major);
Faculty of Society (Sociology and Anthropology) and (Politic);
Faculty of Education (English and Thai Teaching, Educational Administration and Out-System Education major);
Master Degree course (Buddhism and Philosophy) and (Buddhist Studies).

Research Institute in Pali and Buddhist literature called Nava Nalanda Mahavihara. It is not for the Indians only, but for students from all over the world in general, and from Southeast Asian countries in particular. The founder of this Institute is the Venerable J. Kashyap. There were some other stalwarts who conceived the idea of reviving the past glories of Ancient Nalanda University, and their efforts have resulted in the establishment of the only Institute catering largely to students interested in Pali and Buddhist Philosophy. The late Dr. Rajendra Prasad, former President of India, laid the foundation stone of the present Institute building on the 20th November, 1951, and this Research Institute was formally inaugurated by Dr. S. Radhadrishnan, the then Vice-President of India, on the 20th March, 1956.

The Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies (OCBS) is being founded to promote the academic study of Buddhism. The Director of Studies is Prof. Richard Gombrich.

The Institute has three Departments of Study representing Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist Culture and Buddhist Literary Sources. Pali Studies come under the department of Buddhist Literary Sources. Currently Professors Asanga Tilakaratne and Ven. K. Dhammajoti serve as heads of departments of Buddhist philosophy and Buddhist Literary Sources respectively After Professors Kapila Abhayawansa's retirement the headship of the department of Buddhist cultures remains open Professors T. Endo heads Pali Studies.
