Nandaka Vihara, a Buddhist monastery situated in Bukit Mertajam (Penang), is set up primarily for the practice of meditation. It is near to Cherok Tokun Forest Recreational Park. Activities conducted here include meditation classes & retreats, dhamma talks, temporary ordination, observance of 8 precepts, chanting class and Sunday dhamma class for children.
The Samatha-Vipassana way of meditation is taught here. First, the meditator is taught Anapanasati, meditation on in-breath & out-breath. Once the meditator is successful in Anapanasati, having attained all the stages of concentration, the meditation teacher will teach Vipassana. In Vipassana, the meditator is to realize what mental & physical phenomena are; and to understand their Impermanence, Suffering and Non-self nature.
Although prior knowledge of meditation is not necessary (as the meditation teacher will provide guidance to beginners), those who have previously practiced at Pa Auk Tawya Forest Monastery in Myanmar might have better theoretical understanding of the technique.
You are welcomed to practice meditation here under the guidance of our meditation teacher. You are also welcomed to join other activities such as dhamma talks, observance of 8 precepts, etc.

Goljek Forest Hermitage – also called Samaṇadīpa – is a small monastic (samaṇa) sanctuary (dīpa) for small number of monks from the contemplative and conservative forest tradition of Theravāda Buddhism. It is the first of the kind in this part of Europe that follows the original teachings of the Buddha, as found in the early texts and has an unbroken linage from around 2600 years ago. The monks follow the high standard of the monastic code (vinaya) and the teaching (dhamma), which can be found in Theravādin countries (Thailand, Sri Lanka, Burma, Laos, Cambodia).
Samaṇadīpa uses two seperated lands. The main Hermitage's cottage (Ārāma) stands on a slope of half a hectare of land, and more than 3/4 of it is covered in forest. The cottage has the Shrine Room, the kitchen and two bedrooms; in the forest are two kuties, Abhaya Kuṭī and Piya Kuṭī. The second - more secluded and private property - has a cottage (Viveka Vihāra) with two bedrooms and one kuti (Viveka Kuṭī). The property is located about 20min walk from the Samanadipa Arama Vihara.
Samaṇadīpa welcomes visits from anyone who is interested in the Buddha's Teaching, meditation or seeking the answers to their existential problems. The main purpose of the place is to provide seclusion for monks, however any visitor is welcome to talk to monks and also could stay here overnight for few days.

The World Fellowship of Buddhists ( WFB ) was founded on May 25 B.E.2493 (1950) in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where representatives from 27 countries in Asia, Europe and North America (including Hawaii) met for this purpose. Nearly every school of Buddhism in the Mahayana, Theravada, and Vajrayana traditions was represented by members of the Sangha as well as laity. This was probably the first time in the history of Buddhism that such a gathering was held. No Buddhist sect, school or organization was unwilling to attend the meeting. Thus founded, the WFB represents the common interests of Buddhists throughout the world numbering hundreds of millions.
