VRI was established in 1985 to conduct research into the sources and applications of Vipassana Meditation. It's next to the Vipassana International Academy (VIA), known as Dhamma Giri ("Hill of Dharma"), located in Igatpuri, about 136km from Mumbai (Bombay).
